Start and end dates display as part of the course settings, however, after a course ends, the materials, student work, and grades remain available. As a default, instructors and students maintain access to all materials and grades. This means everyone who has access to the Course Key will have access to the same materials. To prevent new, or all, students from accessing materials in an old class section, change the settings to prevent further access.

Block New Students from the Course

Either or both of these two options maintains current student access but blocks new students from entering the old course.

Start at the Manage Course page and choose "Edit course settings" from the left menu.

  1. Change "Auto Admit Students" to No from the drop-down menu and click Update to ensure any new students trying to access the old course would need instructor approval.
    OR

  2. Change the Course Key and click UPDATE.
Note: Changing the Course Key allows the original Course Key to be reused and any student communications for subsequent terms will not need to be updated with a new Course Key.

Block both current and new students from the course

Either of these two options will block both current and new students from accessing the course materials.

Start at the Manage Course page.

  1. Using the Roster functions, select all students and suspend all students, then choose “Edit course settings” and change the Course Key and click UPDATE.
    OR

  2. Alternately, if suspending the student enrollments is not preferred, close access to all activities by using the scheduling functions, then choose “Edit course settings” and change the Course Key and click UPDATE.
